Customs officers or smugglers?: the mediating role of intercultural
actors.

Towards new interdisciplinary models for cultural transfer.

As recently claimed by D’hulst (2012: 150), “more work is
needed to understand how translation relates to other transfer
techniques and how this relation determines the specifics of
translation. The concept of assumed transfer (…) is a tool to
identify and describe the forms, meanings and functions of a broad
spectrum of exchange activities taking place both between and within
cultures. (…) One essential task is to reconstruct the
interrelations between different techniques and between transfer
techniques, their carriers and their agents”.

The purpose of this panel is to study precisely the broad range of
transfer activities of intercultural actors and their role for the
building of national, international or infra-national models of culture.
Transfer activities occur in particular in so-called emerging and
heterogeneous cultures, in which several languages and cultural domains
interact. They are a major, yet rarely acknowledged, type of cultural
practices. An efficient way to get a grip on the forms and functions of
these activities, as well as on the institutional means to organize and
control them, is to approach them through their concrete agents, esp.
the intercultural actors that bridge languages and cultural domains
(literature, art etc.).

Intercultural actors are indeed often, and much more than the prominent
figures canonized by mainstream cultural and literary history, the true
architects of new and multiform sets of transfer practices within
multilingual and multicultural contexts. Firstly, being multilingual
poets and/or novelists and/or critics, these actors may have translated,
adapted and manipulated in many ways (parodies, summaries, censorship)
discursive products (poems, novels, song texts, opera libretto’s) of
other language communities. As such, they may have served as discursive
bridges between linguistic communities. Secondly, they may have
undertaken targeted inter-artistic (field-transgressing) and
intercultural activities (transgressing national borders), which
embedded their multi-faceted discursive products in intercultural and
inter-artistic networks. They may have founded or taken an active part
in the editing boards of national and international (French, Dutch,
German, British) magazines and periodicals, salons, literary and
artistic associations, art and music academies, artists’ workshops,
reading circles etc. In sum, their transfer roles are much more complex
than usually pointed out in national studies of the inception and
development of literary and artistic repertoires or in single discipline
approaches, like history or literary studies. Contrary to the usual
framing, it is not opportune to confine these actors to a single
language, artistic activity or cultural group. They were active across
all these borders – without necessarily annulling them –, in
such a way that they managed to configure their own hybrid, i.e.
national as well as international, intercultural and inter-artistic,
identities.

Possible research questions are:

(1) what were the aims, forms and functions of intercultural actors’
transfer activities: multilingual writing, translation,
self-translation, plagiarism, summarizing, parodying, censoring, …;

(۲) which inter-artistic and intercultural networks organized and
controlled these transfer activities: membership in editorial boards of
national and international periodicals, salons, literary and artistic
associations, art and music academies, artists’ workshops, reading
circles etc.;

(3) which effects did these activities and networks have on the
process of cultural nation building (affirmation, problematization,
rejection of specific subsets) and on the relations between the cultural
communities they represented.

(4) what are the methodological and theoretical consequences for
Translation Studies and its concepts?

Panel: Fansubbing, non-professional subtitling has come to stay

Fansubbing, also known as non-professional subtitling, is probably
themost widely spread practice within the community translation
framework. For avariety of reasons, TV and cinema fans have decided to
produce their ownsubtitles and distribute them through the Internet,
most of the time before therelease of the official version. Contrary to
the general belief, a considerablenumber of these Internet communities
have developed their own guidelines andfollow well-structure production
processes. The complexity and theheterogeneous nature of fansubbing
communities demand a more systemic analysisfrom Translation Studies.

Given the extent of the non-professional subtitling activity,
TranslationStudies should aim for a better understanding of
non-professional subtitlingand the implications it might bring for
mainstream subtitling practices.Contributions are welcome on any aspect
of non-professional subtitling,including:

- Production conditions ofnon-professional translation

- Implications of non-professionalsubtitling for formal translation
training

- Collaborative models ofnon-professional translation communities

- Interaction in non-professionaltranslation communities

- Motivations of non-professionaltranslators

- Ethical implications

- Non-professional subtitling andpolitics

- Audience/practionners attitude towardsnon-professional subtitling

- Reception

It is mandatory to foster academic discussion of these areas and
createspaces where the trends in non-professional subtitling research
can be sharedand discussed.

Call For Papers: Panel on Translation and Interpreting in Religious Settings

7th EST CONGRESS, 29 – 31 August 2013, University of Mainz in Germersheim,
Germany

This panel aims to bring together researchers with an interest in Translation and Interpreting in Religious Settings (TIRS) around the question: what contributions can TIRS research bring to Translation and Interpreting Studies? Papers may cover any example of TIRS in and between any religions, such as: interpreting in religious meetings, missionary translation and interpreting, translation and interpreting within and between religious groups, and TIRS between different modalities and media (e.g. print, subtitling, recordings, etc).

It is expected that this panel will contribute to Translation and Interpreting Studies knowledge by exploring the interface between TIRS and other forms of translation and interpreting, especially through challenging, advancing or reassessing existing Translation and Interpreting theories, concepts and assumptions. It will also allow researchers to show how concepts from religious studies and theology might be applied via TIRS to wider debates in Translation and Interpreting Studies. The key focus of this panel will therefore be the cross-fertilisation of ideas, methods and theoretical frameworks between TIRS and the wider world of Translation and Interpreting Studies and between researchers looking at TIRS. Papers are welcome on any aspect of TIRS related to the theme of the panel, including:

- How may results and theories from TIRS be applied to wider debates in Translation and Interpreting Studies?
- In what ways can TIRS be used as a testing ground for theories from Translation and Interpreting Studies?
- How apt are Translation and Interpreting Studies methods for answering questions involving TIRS?
- What are the social and/or theological role(s) of translators and/or interpreters in religious settings?
- How can pedagogy for TIRS be developed based on Translation and Interpreting Studies?
- What can we learn from the use of written, spoken or multimedia corpora in TIRS research?
- What impacts have emerging translation and interpreting technologies had on TIRS?

Panel on “Corpus-based translation studies”

While corpus-based research critically depends on the availability of suitable tools and resources, there is still a lack of user-friendly tools allowing researchers in the soft sciences to create and analyze corpora according to the standards of the discipline.
This panel aims to provide a framework for discussing corpus data, tools and approaches which may allow translation scholars to collaborate among them and with the NLP community, in order to improve the quality of resources and make them available and accessible, with the ultimate goal of bridging the gap between the hard and soft sides of this multi-faceted field.

Contributions related, but not limited, to the following topics are welcome:
· NLP-oriented perspectives and methods for T&I research

· Corpus-based methodologies and T&I studies

· Annotation models for descriptive translation studies

· Translation and corpus design

· Qualitative and quantitative approaches to corpus analysis in T&I studies

Macau Crossings: Translation and Cultures in Contact

The International Symposium on Translation Studies aims to bring together international researchers from the fields of translation, languages and literature in the context of the intersection of languages and cultures, focusing on the specific case of Macau, and also the general case of Portuguese culture in Asia.
Potential contributors are invited to submit a 300 word abstract on themes related to any of the following conference tracks:

- Macau in cultural crossings
- Identity and interculturality in Macau
- Chinese-Portuguese translation of sacred texts
- Chinese-Portuguese translation of literature
- The contribution of translators for Chinese-Portuguese cultural
exchanges
- Agents of translation in Chinese-Portuguese
- The concept of groundlessness (Bodenlosigkeit) and language
crossings in Asia

Papers and panels on the above themes are invited . Papers should last a maximum of thirty minutes.

New Trends in Translation and Interpreting Pedagogy

Following the successful ATISA VI conference in March dedicated to the topic of translation studies and featuring keynote speaker Dr. Donald Kiraly, the editorial board of TIS is inviting conference participants and others to submit manuscripts for a special issue on translation and interpreting pedagogy slated for publication in 2014 and guest edited by Dr. Sonia Colina and Dr. Claudia V.Angelelli. This Special Issue casts a very wide net in terms of methodology and subject area including but not limited to methodological, theoretical, empirical and experimental contributions in any area of translation or interpreting pedagogy as well as on specific issues of testing and measurement, teacher development and/or new technologies.
